The Antarctica Cruise Season
Five short months, each with its own wildlife and light.
Compare Antarctica DeparturesA Short Season of Long Days
Antarctic cruising happens only in the southern spring and summer, from roughly November to March. The season is brief, but each part of it has a character of its own.
Near the Peninsula, summer brings very long days and, around midsummer, only a short twilight at night. Sea ice retreats as the season goes on, opening more bays and channels to ships. The wildlife calendar runs in step, from penguins arriving to court in early season to chicks growing up and whales feeding late in the summer.
Month by Month
| Period | What to expect |
|---|---|
| November | Early season: pristine snow, more sea ice, penguins arriving and courting, dramatic icescapes |
| December–January | Peak season: longest days, mildest temperatures, penguin eggs and the first chicks; busiest and most popular |
| February | Chicks growing fast, active colonies, increasing whale sightings, less snow on landing sites |
| March | Late season: whales often at their most numerous, sunsets return, fewer departures |
Adding South Georgia and the Falklands
Longer voyages that add South Georgia and the Falkland Islands usually take close to three weeks from Ushuaia. South Georgia is famous for colonies of king penguins numbering in the hundreds of thousands, fur seals and elephant seals, and its link to Ernest Shackleton, who is buried at Grytviken. The Falklands add rockhopper and other penguins and a glimpse of life in Stanley.
These voyages are often scheduled early or late in the season. They suit travelers who want the widest wildlife experience and have the time for more sea days. South Georgia has its own visitor rules and biosecurity checks, and some sites there are closed in certain months to protect breeding wildlife.

Booking Strategy
December and January departures are the first to fill, especially on small ships, so book early for those weeks. Shoulder-season sailings in November and March can offer more choice. Whatever the month, our cruise advisors at Mister Cruise will tell you what each departure is likely to bring. For travelers over 50 planning a big trip, our sister site Baby Boomer Cruises has more planning ideas.
Season Questions
Can you cruise to Antarctica in the northern summer?
No. The Antarctic cruise season runs only in the southern spring and summer, roughly November to March. The rest of the year, sea ice and darkness close the region to tourism.
How cold is it?
On the Peninsula in summer, temperatures near the coast are often around freezing, but wind chill, spray and wet landings make it feel colder. Layers and waterproofs matter more than heavy bulk.
When is the best month for penguin chicks?
Chicks usually hatch from about late December, and January and February are the classic months to see them. Exact timing depends on the species and the site.
